How Thorlux is Building Lean Leadership Through Apprenticeships

Level 2 Lean Manufacturing Operative Apprenticeship

July 2026

Back Story

Global lighting manufacturer Thorlux Lighting has partnered with Cidori and Barnet Southgate College to embed continuous improvement across its manufacturing operation through the Lean Manufacturing Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship.

What began as an investment in developing manufacturing skills has become an important part of the company’s talent strategy, helping employees improve processes, eliminate waste and progress into leadership roles.

“This apprenticeship programme…has empowered our employees to become forward thinkers who challenge the norm and push boundaries.”

Programme Benefits

Like many manufacturers, Thorlux wanted to equip employees with practical improvement skills that could be applied immediately on the factory floor. Rather than simply training staff, the business wanted to create a culture where employees were confident identifying inefficiencies, challenging existing processes and leading positive change.

Working with Cidori and Barnet Southgate College, Thorlux introduced a bespoke Lean Manufacturing Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship, tailored around the company’s manufacturing environment.

Throughout the programme, learners developed practical knowledge of Lean principles, problem solving, waste reduction and continuous improvement, applying their learning through real workplace improvement projects that delivered measurable operational benefits.

I pursued the Lean Manufacturing apprenticeship to deepen my understanding of how to improve my department and contribute to the overall success of the business. Since completing the apprenticeship, I’ve achieved two promotions: transitioning to Deputy Team Leader of the Fabrication Department and eventually becoming the Fabrication Lead, where I oversee the day-to-day department operations. I would highly recommend this apprenticeship to anyone looking to expand their knowledge and drive improvements in manufacturing.”

Outcome / Achievements

The impact extended well beyond technical skills.

Following completion of the programme, employees (some of the team seen right) began progressing into more senior positions across the business.

Both Dan Thompson (pictured above) Shaun Henley (group – 2nd from right) achieved promotions into departmental leadership roles, applying the Lean techniques they developed during their apprenticeship to improve efficiency and support their teams.

This demonstrates how apprenticeships can support succession planning by developing existing employees into confident future leaders.
